Sometimes I read about a place on the Internet, and the expectations skyrocket. Then I visit it and reality lands differently. It happened in Plovdiv (Bulgaria) and it was a disaster. Syracuse was certainly not as bad but did not live up to the expectations either. I guess it is better to lower them and get pleasantly surprised. We did have the best pistachio-filled cornetto (croissant) of our trip so far though, which was a definite delight. Wandered through the old town and Ortigia island, and got reminded of how interwoven the ancient civilizations are. Myths blend with history as Odysseus’ trials and Pythagoras’ discoveries coincide here.
